What is Congential Cytomegalovirus? This is a virus simular to herpes and is acquired in utero causing severe generalized disease in the baby with enlargement of liver and spleen, jaundice, microcephaly ( small head size) with mental retardation, and intercranial calcification. The baby may have signs of intrauterine growth retardation ( failure to grow in the womb) microcelpaly ( small head) respiratory distress or encephalitis ( inflamation of the brain). The diagnosis may be confirmed by testing the urine for virus. The prognosis depends on how severe and when the virus was caught.
