History of 2008 (Bawtry) Squadron

In 1943 two years after the formation of the Air Training Corps a detached flight of 103 (Doncaster) squadron was formed at Bircotes North Nottinghamshire. The detached flight soon became 2008 (Bircotes) squadron. In the early 1950s the squadron moved two miles to the RAF station at Bawtry. On the 15th October 1956 it was re designated 2008 (Bawtry) squadron. Until No 1 Groups departure close links were developed between the squadron and the station.

When RAF Bawtry closed down it was decided by the squadron to design a badge, A white rose of Yorkshire was chosen as a background and to commemorate a long association with No: 1 Group a panthers head was placed upon the rose, and our motto “Spiritus Honos et Fides” (Faith Honour and Loyalty).

The squadron participates in a whole range of activities and in 1988, was judged to be the most efficient squadron in the South Yorkshire Wing. The squadron is proud of its association with No 1 Group and hopes to maintain its high level of achievement in the Best traditions of the station.

Today 2008 sqn remains on the site of RAF Bawtry, located close to Bawtry Hall. The squadron currently has around 45 cadets and many committed staff. The squadron participates in many activities within the ATC, and were crowned South and West Yorkshire wing 5 a side football champions in 2004. As well as activities within the ATC the squadron assists the community by helping out in events within Bawtry, and fundraising for charity.
