The Village Contd.

Cromwell in the 17th century. Another story is that they were done by Cromwell’s followers. The beauty and craftsmanship of the inscriptions lead one to believe the former to be the truth. Because of there beauty and historical interest the pub is now a listed building.

In 1377 the Ashdon Guild (a religious guild) was founded and sometime between then and the late 15th century a hall called the Guildhall was built by the members, close to the church. Much later it became a workhouse and later still turned into three cottages. Now, however, it is attractively restored and is a private house. Apart from a few cottages, the Guildhall and a building known as The Hall, the only remains of the earlier village are some plateaus and ditches indicating where the old village buildings stood. Ashdon has always been a farming village, beginning with the Yeoman and Husbandmen until the enclosures forced them out in favour of larger holdings. Even so the 1801 census shows the existence of 39 separate farms in the parish of Ashdon.
