A Brief History

Ashdon is a beautiful little village and lies about four miles from Saffron Walden on the road to Bartlow. The original village was built around the parish church of All Saints situated on the top of the hill. Reputed to be the church where Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn were secretly married. It is believed that because of the plague, a move was made down into the valley where a new larger settlement formed along the banks of the Bourne Brook. Many of the older buildings of the village are to be found here, although none are earlier than the 15th century. The Rose and Crown public house dates from this period and has some interesting wall inscriptions believed to have been crafted by monks hiding from
