Our first goal, that of repairing the cross has now been completed! We shared the rededication of the Cross on the Green on the 8th June, 2003. John Gully was an interesting character, he owned Ackworth New Hall and is buried in a private cemetary adjacent to the churchyard of S. Cuthbert's. Born the son of a Landlord/butcher he soon landed in debtors prison because of the bad state of the company on inheritance. He became a boxing champion and paid off his debts. He found Ackworth a good base to visit racing sites around the country. The secretary has recently compiled a talk which can be given to local community groups.
There are many old milestones in Ackworth, some older than others and these have received a fresh coat of paint to give them a more cared for appearance.
The obelisk at the top of Station Road is looking badly weathered and restoration starts this summer, which should restore it to something like its 1805 appearance. There is another obelisk at the end of Long Lane, High Ackworth that is an exact copy of this one, but it was erected at a later date. Most recently it had a three branch light on the top, though in older pictures there was but a single lamp.
Another talk available gives details of Luke Howard, an Ackworth resident who named the clouds, as well as a talk on Richard III, looking at his local impact.
