I first became interested in radio at the age of 8 years old.My best friend had a kit given to him for his birthday,it was an HAC 1 valve radio, that you had to build,I seem to remember it had a large 90volt battery for the HT.
My interest started then,we built it,and heard Radio Budapest on it,I was hooked!
I had never heard of Amateur radio at this point,so I happily spent every hour listening to broadcast stations on the "HAC".
We were then invited to a scout jamboree station,it was being hosted by Dick Perryman G2APN,and watching him talk to stations all around the world, sent me running off to get my ticket as fast as I could!
I eventually got my licence in 1978,my first call was G8PVH,but I knew very little about 144mhz,in fact I didnt know it existed until another local amateur G8HFE,showed me his FDK MULTI 2000.
I was amazed with it,we went up to the local hill and worked GM3OUR/P on 144mhz ssb, from that moment on I was hooked on 144mhz.
I quickly became very active on 144 from my parents qth,and then from my own qth in Alton Hampshire. In 1982 I passed my morse, because I was fed up with missing all the Russians in Aurora!
I then became G4RRA.
I have been very active with this call ever since, working 365 locator squares from my old qth in Farnham Surrey (IO91OF).I moved to our dream house in the year 2000,with my Wife Beverley, and have been very active from here (IO80BS)
Ive never lost the interest in 144Mhz,and still love the band, its seen a few changes over the years, but for me is still the most exciting part of the spectrum.
